What potential problems exist with Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) surgery?

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is also known as refractive lens replacement, clear lens exchange or clear lens surgery.

RLE is generally used for people aged over 40 who have reduced vision (but not cataracts) and who are not suitable for either LASIK or PRK Laser eye surgery.

As with all surgery, the procedure comes with risks and patients should be advised of these.

Some of the problems or risks associated with lens replacement surgery include:

  • Negligent care before, during or after the eye surgery
  • Residual vision problems following the surgery eg. Short or long-sightedness
  • Glare and halos.
  • Dry eyes
  • Eye pain and redness.
  • Retinal detachment. Although this can be corrected by surgery, there is a risk that vision may not be the same and in fact could be significantly impacted.
  • Being fitted with a faulty eye lens, which would possibly require replacement if complications arise.
