What is an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram or ERCP?

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (referred to as ERCP) is a procedure that uses a combination of endoscopy and X-rays to diagnose and treat problems in the bile and pancreatic ducts.

Where are ERCP procedures performed?

ERCP can be done on an outpatient basis or as an in-patient at a hospital. It is carried out in the hospital X-ray or endoscopy department.

The endoscope is a small camera attached to a thin tube, which is inserted via the mouth and passed down into the oesophagus, stomach, and small intestine.

Who is a candidate for an ERCP?

ERCP is used on patients who have blocked bile or pancreatic ducts. Blockages can be caused by several issues and developments, including gallstones, infection, or cancer.
