Is ERCP considered surgery?

ERCP is not the same as open surgery. Open surgery requires an incision into the abdomen and is carried out under general anaesthetic, meaning the patient is unconscious during the process.

ERCP is also different to keyhole surgery, during which small holes are made into the abdomen so that a laparoscope can be inserted.

With ERCP, the endoscope is inserted via the patient’s mouth.
