What is anaesthesia awareness?

When you have an operation or medical procedure, you may be given a general anaesthetic to render you unconscious and relax your muscles while the operation is performed.

If the anaesthetic wears off and you regain consciousness, this is referred to as anaesthesia awareness.

The level of consciousness can vary from being able to recall a few words said, to being able to see and feel everything going on.

What does it mean to have anaesthesia awareness?

To have anaesthesia awareness means being aware of what is happening during an operation when you should be unconscious. It is an unintended situation, which means it is not supposed to happen.
