Stomach cancer is a disease whose causes have not been fully identified. However, it is believed to develop when there are changes in the DNA of a cell in the stomach. The factors that may cause an increase in the risk have been identified and may include:
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Gastritis
- Family history
- A diet high in smoked and salty foods
- Infection with Helicobacter pylori
- A diet low in vegetables and fruits
- Stomach polyps
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
